2016 Plants added

With new log roll borders I have been able to accommodate more plants, and with a new little proper greenhouse I have been able to grow plants from seeds, so I have been busy filling the new borders.

Log-roll summer border
This was built at the end of March enclosing the Acer Palmatum Purpureum and Knopfia plants so these are included. The variegated Sedum plant was lifted and replanted on the rhs. Two white heathers and the blue Pulmonaria were left just outside the log-roll thus creating a nicely curved bed. The new plants that have been added are:-

  • Tete-a-tete daffs planted in their six pots directly into the border, so they can be lifted to make room for summer plants
  • Fritillaria planted in flower both sides of the new border
  • Aubretia x six plants around the log-roll border edges
  • Camelia cerise colour planted at the back near the trellis
  • Dianthus x six plants
  • Pansies x ten plants of mixed colours around the log-roll border edges
  • Saxifraga x six plants around the log-roll border edges
  • Gypsophila paniculata 2015 purchase kept previously in pot
  • Lavandula stoechas (French Lavender) 2014 purchase kept previously kept in pot
  • Gladiolus Black Surprise & Gladiolus Limoncello
I planted these right at the back of the summer border against the trellis with Black Surprise staggered behind Limoncello.
  • Dutch Iris bulbs ‘Metallic Mixture’ x 10 planted around the two clumps of Fritillaria
  • Dahlia ‘Rebecca’s World’ x 2 Tubers planted towards the back
  • Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ (Montbretia) Corm x 10 (either side of the Knopfia
  • Cornflower seed patch mixed colours
  • Nigella seed patch mixed colours
  • Sweet Williams seed patches x about 6
  • Sweet Williams from last year moved from border now occupied by the greenhouse
  • Cosmos x 10 grown from seed in my greenhouse

One log-roll planter added at the end of March around the foot of the pear tree contains a wild flower seed mix and there are also mixed colour Nigella seeds sown in the pot at the base of the Eucalyptus.

Come June I will hopefully be adding more bedding plants grown in my greenhouse from seed to both the summer log-roll border and the window boxes and dog baskets.

Climbing Rose “Masquerade” x 2
I actually planted one root in the tub at the base of the gazebo during April. I will see how it fares in there for a year, and get it planted properly somewhere else if it hates it in a pot. The second root I put into a largish plant pot for the time being. I need help to get a hole dug at the back of the garden for this climber or else I will have to buy massive pots and hope they will grow in them.

Photinia serratifolia ‘Pink Crispy’ I could not resist buying this in mid April when I visited a small garden centre in Crick, but I have left it in a pot until I see how it performs.

Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’ I think. This was given me for my birthday in May and I put it straight into the gravel garden almost opposite one I have already got, which doesn’t seem to mind it in the sun, although they are supposed to be in partial shade.
